The European Life-Desirows project in which UPCT researchers participate together with Regenera Levante, the Arco Sur Mar Menor Irrigation Community, Hidrogea and Hidrotec holds an informative day this Tuesday to publicize its results after more than three years of work and show the pilot plant in which they are desalinating and denitrifying well water using renewable energy.
The day begins in the UPCT Rectorate at 9:30 with technical explanations of the project and presentation of results and conclusions. Subsequently, a trip will be made to the pilot plant, located in the facilities of the Arco Sur Irrigation Community, near Cabo de Palos. The pilot plant uses biomass and photovoltaic energy and also uses wind in the brine drying process.
The objective of the project is to eliminate nitrates from groundwater, recycle them and reuse them as agricultural fertilizer, as well as recover salts for various industrial uses, thus complying with the circular economy strategy as long as no waste is generated, in line with the so-called ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge, for its acronym in English).
The project (LIFE19 ENV/ES/000447) is being developed by a consortium led by the company Regenera Levante. The researchers Juan García Bermejo and Antonio Vigueras Rodríguez, from the School of Roads and Mines, participate; Francisco Vera, Ángel Molina and María Socorro García Cascales, from Industrial Engineering and Rafael Domingo, from Agrónomos, with outstanding experience in electrical engineering, renewable energies, thermal engineering and fluids and water treatment. The Life-Desirows budget obtained funding of 867,000 euros from the European Union.
The Life Desirows event is part of the European Green Week: https://green-week.event.europa.eu/partner-events_en . Also to the European Sustainable Energy Week, where only six events have been selected in all of Spain: https://sustainable-energy-week.ec.europa.eu/sustainable-energy-days/find-sustainable-energy-day-near -you_en
